The Role of Waqf in Islamic Education: Contribution of KH. Abdul Manaf's Thoughts

This article aims to explore the contribution of KH. Abdul Manaf’ thoughts towards his vision to realize the institution of Darunnajah Islamic Boarding School. As a Muslim who has a foundation of Islamic worldviews, he managed to show the success of the role of waqf in the establishment of educational institutions that are growing rapidly to this day. This article is a qualitative research based on literature and interviews. Referring to primary sources from books, personal notes, lectures, and interviews with some of KH. Abdul Manaf’s family. In this research, the author found three important points of his thoughts that can contribute to Muslim ummah. First, he succeeded in proving the success of the role of waqf in the continuity of educational institutions in which it becomes a place for the regeneration of  young Muslims. Second, his contribution is related to institutional management. His experience as a director at Makmur Raya Company shows his managerial skills in managing employees and financial administration. This experience is applied in the management of the educational institutions he founded. The third contribution is in the aspect of education. As an educator, he succeeded in establishing Darunnajah Islamic Boarding School by providing educational facilities for all groups including the poor, and orphans. He provides opportunities for anyone to learn and does not limit it to certain circles. The implication of the application of waqf as a support for this educational institution can inspire other institutions in Indonesia. Many pesantrens find difficulties in running their institutions due to lack of operational funds. With the contribution of KH. Abdul Manaf’ thoughts and experiences, Pesantren Darunnajah becomes a model for other institutions to be followed and developed.
